THE RIDERS

Pete Gisbourne crests the Mountain at Cadwell Park.

 Pete Gisbourne

Pete's Webpage.

Peter is the 1999 Open Superstock Champion, he is riding his Knots Motorcycles sponsored ex Honda Britain VFR. With which he has certainly proved to be the man to beat. Although he blew the engine at the final Cadwell Park meeting, so it will be interesting to see if the team can get the new engine sorted for the beginning of the new season. Nick Webb Pete’s hard working mechanic is known to work wonders with the VFR so my guess is, they will come out fighting.

Dez Chand pushing hard at Riches corner Snetterton.

Dez Chand

Dez is the 1999 New Era Superstock Champion, the New Era rounds run concurrently with the Open Superstock rounds. The main difference is that there are more of them. Dez rides an ex Fred Merkel Honda VFR to good effect. His 1999 season was hampered by engine problems, with blow up after blow up and several crashes. But like a true ‘Stocker’ he came through smiling. Or was that a grimace?

Club secretary Steve Spencer on his lovely FZ Yamaha Harribox swooping through Hall Bends, Cadwell Park

Steve Spencer

Steve's Webpage.

Steve is the Open Superstock Club secretary and founder. His knowledge of FZ Yamaha’s is unsurpassed. Steve is riding an ex MCN endurance team Harribox FZ750, that was raced in the World Endurance championship 1986. The bike is very advanced for its era and does not look out of place against the machinery of today. Steve also rides it in the Manx G.P. Such is the spirit of the ‘Stocker’.Steve also prepares engines and bikes for other Stockers. Neil's RC30, Mat, Johan and Peter Young's machines are but a few.

Mark Freeman splashes through the puddles on his way to a class win and second overall at a wet Cadwell Park.

Mark Freeman

Mark rides a FZ Yamaha this time an overbored version at 911cc. Mark will be a serious contender this year as he hopes to get to more meetings than he managed last year. Mark works for Flitwick Motorcycles and has been developing his already very rapid FZ throughout the 1999 season, so 2000 should see the feathers start to fly.

Neil Robinson guns his FZ750 hard at Cadwell Park.

Neil Robinson

Neil has made his presence felt all through the 1999 season with some very competitive rides on his FZ750. Not only riding in the Superstock races but in the open 1300 class where he has opened a lot of eyes. He has had some bad luck with a few falls, ending with an absolute purler at the final Cadwell meeting, but he’s fighting fit and ready to go for 2000, with a rebuilt bike and the gritty Grimsby determination he is known for.

Daves immaculate GSXR1100 Suzuki.

Dave Bennett

Welcome to Dave Bennett, Dave has joined us for the 2002 season on his GSXR 1100G after coming out of retirement. He started racing in 1985 on a GPZ 600R Kawasaki racing in the 600-production championship for two years, switching in 1988 to a 350 YPVS racing with the Bemsee. The Kwaka came out again for the 89/90 season after a small rest Dave again returned racing a Hagon 500 Honda single with mixed results for the season and rounding the season off on a Suzuki 750 on the podium. The smell of Castrol R and dubbined leather has lured Dave out yet again on his lovely 1100 Suzuki. We wish him luck.

Johan at the Esses at Mallory Park.

Johan Ketals

Johan has to be the keenest rider in British club racing, coming from his home near Bruges in Belgium to compete in all the Open Superstock rounds with his Suzuki GSXR 750. 1999 was Johan’s first year in road racing, it didn’t show! After many years of riding motocross his starting technique is superb. Johan was another rider developing a standard road bike, in fact it still had a tail light at the end of the season. Next year will see a new bike that will be a much different machine, we may yet see the most improved rider of 1999 shocking a few people in 2000.

Matt Pollard in the warm up area

Matt Pollard

Matts webpage

Matt could also be a fly in the ointment for the established ‘Stockers’. Matt was second in the 1999 Roadstocks Championship on a Suzuki GSXR 750 with some very mature rides. He constantly gathered points with top places and wins throughout the season. Matt made his presence felt at the final round at Brands Hatch when Trev Dutton lent him his Suzuki 750 for the last non championship race, and was disgruntled when Matt lapped 1.6 seconds faster than him on his own bike.Matt has jumped camps this year and is competing on another 911 FZ Yamaha (Big Red) so the fireworks will be starting right from the beginning of the season. And succeeded in becoming the double championship winner in 2001

Brian Jones Bike

Brian Jones

Brian is another of our veteran competitors. He also has the worst problem of all, competing both as a sidecar driver on his F1 outfit, and as a solo rider on his Yamaha FZ750.Unfortunately Brian had a crash whilst testing his Yamaha at Mallory Park before the season even started last year. But the signs are he's ready to come out for another season with his faithful Yam. We wish him the best of luck with this year.

Gary Skellet over the mountain

Gary Skellet

Gary will be a new rider to the Open Superstock club this year. Yet another rider persuaded out of retirement, you can't keep a good man down.

Jeremy in the warm up area at Cadwell

Jeremy Haywood

Jeremy and his 830cc Suzuki, this is his second year of racing and has improved race on race to his now, tough and  uncompromising style.  Scaring all of us.  Fourth last year not bad for first season, where will he end up this year.

Peter Young's FZ

Peter Young

Peter changed from the 600's to a 911cc FZ this year equaling his fastest times at Mallory park and Cadwell on his first two outings another competent and fine rider in his 3rd year of racing who will, improve as the season progresses, and as he gets used to this completely new bike.

Richard Bate in action

Richard Bate

Reformed alcoholic, heavy smoker and karaoke star. Started racing 5th may 02 at Cadwell park, never seen the track, never done a lap, until the actual race, and never came last. Is there no end to this man's talent?  What does the future hold for Randy Mamola?.........I mean Richard Bate

Ian at Snett on his FZ

Ian Compton

Ian joined us two years ago after retiring from sidecar racing, unfortunately he has been dogged by injuries both on the road and football! So, hopefully this year will prove more successful for him.

Mark Ess

Mark started his race career in 1998 after having experience doing a couple of years track days. His first race bike was a ZXR750L standard, competing in EMRA club road stocks class in 1999 – 2000.He then raced an RGV250 with Pegasus and New Era Clubs in the Formula 400 Championships. In 2001 he raced in the same class but on a ZXR400 Kawasaki, this being a successful year for him.2002 moved him into the 600 class riding again with Pegasus and New Era Clubs, his best result being a couple of second places in a highly competitive class, racing a CBR 600, it was realised by the end of the year the budget involved to carry on racing competitively in the class was very high and made it hard for the average club racer to compete. Now always having a passion for the Yamaha OW01 and finding a class he could be competitive in, has quit the 600 class and has taken up the challenge of the Open Superstocks Championship. Now riding his Yamaha OW01 that previously competed in the MRO Series, Where is was run with a 1040cc FZR engine which was in the end  blown up and dismantled, when the bike was bought it came in several boxes.  A suitable YZF 750 engine was found and the bike was stripped into pieces and rebuilt bit by bit and piece by piece, slowly but surely coming together. He is now looking forward to racing a ‘real’ race bike and getting back to enjoying racing after the stress of the Supersport 600 class.
