EICHSFELD ENGINEERING Steve has been racing since 1991, first with the Bemsee Club and then with the New Era. His first racing machine was an FZ Yamaha which was aquired at a reasonably low price "just to get started on". After the first season another FZ was spotted at the Alexander Palace Racing show, the love affair with FZs had truly began! A few years were spent racing in the open class, which was of no benefit, winning was not an option. 1995 saw the first trip to the Isle of Man to compete in the Manx Grand Prix. The trusty FZ was put into an FZR chassis to improve the handling for the Island, which worked as Steve came 9th in the Newcomers and 63rd in the Senior. The 1996 season saw the return of the original FZ but once again Steve had to compete in the open class, as there was not a class for older superstock machines. So began the quest to form a class for the old warhorses. An advert was placed in the MCN and the response was good enough to go ahead. The New Era agreed to run the class under their wing and the Open Superstock Racing Club was born. Big Red at the top of the 'Mountain' Cadwell Park. The class runs side by side with the Sound of Thunder grid and is growing in stature every year. Needless to say for the first time Steve was in the top six of the field instead of the last half. A win at Mallory Park was accompanied by many seconds, thirds and fourths. And in 1998 Steve won the New Era Open Superstock Championship. Steve on the Harris FZ at Mansfield again at Cadwell Park. For 1999 Steve introduced his finished Harris ex endurance racer and sold the faithful Big Red. The Harris was taken to the Manx and was a wonderful revelation to Steve in the handling department, needless to say the Manx will be re-visited again this year. 1999 also saw Steve jointly win the GSE cup with Neil Robinson at Mallory Park. Steve's goal this year is to run the rest of the superstock boys ragged and clear off into the distance with the championship. |
